The questions people ask about Psalmwell, answered in the order they usually come up.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account, no sign-in and no email to hand over. Psalmwell works from the moment you open it, and it keeps working with the phone in airplane mode — the verses, the devotionals and the classics are all inside the app.
Are there ads in the free version?
No — and not in the paid one either, because there is no advertising anywhere in Psalmwell. There is no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK and no tracker in the app, and the app makes no network request of any kind.
How do I write a prayer and mark it answered?
Open Prayers and write. Later — days or months later — open the same entry and tap Answered; you can add a line about what happened, and you can leave it blank. Answered prayers move into the Answered book, which is grouped by the month each prayer was answered, so you can read a whole year back.
How many prayers can I write for free?
Three a day, forever. Everything you have already written stays exactly where it is and stays readable — the limit is on writing a fourth entry in one day, never on reading or keeping what is already there. Pro lifts the daily limit.
How do I export my journal?
Open Prayers and tap export. Your whole journal is written to a plain .txt file and handed to the iOS share sheet, where you choose where it goes — Files, Mail, anywhere. This is free and always will be. Pro adds two more: a printable PDF of the Answered book and the year-in-review card. Everything is rendered on this phone; nothing is uploaded to be made.
What is a restore point?
A safety net that you do not have to remember to switch on. Before every export and before every delete, Psalmwell writes a restore point of your journal into its own folder on this phone — the last five are kept. Tap restore and it puts back only the entries that are missing; it never overwrites something you wrote afterwards. This is not the backup feature: restore points never leave the phone.
How do I turn on iCloud backup?
Open Settings and switch on iCloud backup. It is part of Pro and stays off until you turn it on yourself. Psalmwell then encrypts a snapshot on this phone with AES-GCM-256 and writes it into your own iCloud Drive — your Apple Account's storage, not ours — with the key in your iCloud Keychain, where only your own devices can reach it. We have no server in this and cannot read the file.
I have a new phone — how do I restore?
Sign in to the same Apple Account, install Psalmwell, buy or restore Pro, then open Settings and tap Restore from iCloud. Nothing restores on its own; it waits until you ask. The merge only adds what is missing — an entry already on this phone is never overwritten by an older copy. If backup was never on, there is nothing to bring over.
If I delete the app, does the backup go too?
No. The snapshot lives in your own iCloud Drive, so deleting Psalmwell leaves it there. To remove it, either turn the backup switch off inside the app and choose Delete it, or delete the file yourself: iPhone Settings → your Apple Account → iCloud → Manage Storage → Psalmwell, or in the Files app.
Why can I see the backup date when the switch is off?
Because the small manifest next to the encrypted file — the date, the schema version and a count of items — is deliberately left unencrypted, so Settings can show you "last backup" without unlocking anything. No prayer text, no titles and no free text of any kind are in it. Your words are in the encrypted part.
How do I add the widget?
Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen until the icons wiggle, tap + at the top, search for Psalmwell and add today's verse. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customise, tap a widget slot and pick Psalmwell. The Home Screen widget is free; the Lock Screen one is part of Pro. Settings → Widgets walks you through both.
I said no to notifications — is the daily reminder gone?
The reminder cannot arrive, but everything else in the app works exactly as before. iOS only ever shows that permission box once, so Psalmwell will not ask again; Settings shows a line explaining it with an Open Settings button that takes you straight to Psalmwell's notification page. Turn Allow Notifications on there and set the time again. Psalmwell never sets a badge on its icon.
When does the app ask for notification permission?
Only at the moment you pick a reminder time — never on first launch. If you choose No reminder, no permission box appears at all and any reminder already scheduled is cancelled on the spot.
Which Bible translations are included, and why is NIV not one of them?
Psalmwell carries the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), released into the public domain on 30 April 2023, and the King James Version, which is public domain in the United States. Switch between them any time; the widget follows your choice. NIV, ESV and NLT are not included because those translations cannot be licensed for an app like this one. We would rather say so here than have you find out after you download.
What else is in the library, and who wrote it?
Charles Spurgeon's Morning and Evening and Daily Light on the Daily Path — both public domain, both credited by name on the page. Today's reading from each is free every day; Pro opens all 366 days of both. The six thirty-day theme packs (anxiety, marriage, motherhood, grief, waiting, gratitude) are written for this app around those public-domain texts.
Which languages does Psalmwell speak?
Version 1.0 ships an English interface, and the scripture and the classics are in English only. Translations of the interface into other languages are finished but deliberately held back until the scripture itself exists in those languages — an app that says it speaks your language and then hands you an English psalm has not translated the part that matters.
What does Pro cost, and is there a weekly plan?
There is no weekly plan and no free trial. Pro is $29.99 once — not a subscription, it never renews — or $14.99 a year if you would rather spread it out, which auto-renews until you cancel. The App Store shows the exact amount in your own currency before you confirm, and nothing is charged until you do.
How do I cancel the yearly subscription?
On this device open Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions and turn off renewal for Psalmwell. It stays active until the end of the period you already paid for. Apple's rule is that renewal must be cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends. Subscriptions are billed by Apple, and refunds are requested from Apple, not from us — we cannot issue them.
I paid before, on another phone
Sign in with the same Apple Account, open the purchase screen — or Settings — and tap Restore purchases. That brings back what you paid for. It does not bring back what you wrote: your journal travels with you only if you had turned iCloud backup on before.
How do I delete everything?
Delete the app; that removes everything Psalmwell stored on this phone, including the restore points. There is no copy on a server of ours to delete, because one was never made. If you had switched iCloud backup on, delete that snapshot too — it sits in your iCloud Drive, not in our storage.
